Monday Orchids...Cymbidium

It's hard to capture the loveliness of this orchid in a photo taken inside the house on a rainy Sunday.  I almost killed myself trying all angles atop the kitchen steps!  No matter, you get the picture (no pun intended).

They were a present for Madame Mere and these particular ones came from Costco.  Look for them at your local nursery and at Trader Joe's, Kroger and other stores.  This is their time of year.

Cymbidium, often called boat orchids, are known for their large spikes and long lasting blooms.  If you take proper care of them, the flowers will last for 8-10 weeks.

They need lots of light, no direct sun, and a moist soil .  Madame Mere's apartments are the best place for them.  She is the Orchid Whisperer!

For how best to care for them, follow the tips from this source or the one that comes with your orchid.  If you live in California, you can grow them outside. Anywhere else, including Florida (it's too hot for them in Summer), stick to the pot.

    1. Thank you David. I have had so many issues lately, healthwise and otherwise, it's tough, but I enjoy the comments. Now that the weather is better I will be back more often

  2. Madame Mere's orchid is simply gorgeous. I dabble in growing orchids myself, not too many but manageable. I usually have one or two blooming at any given time of the year. They bring so much joy.

    1. Because of the humidity, Florida is a great place to grow them. I have found, however, that light is the main thing. Nice to see you.

  3. It looks as though you succeeded with your photographs. It is difficult to capture the effect of many objects because the camera just doesn't see them the way our eyes do. Still, with the light shining through the petals like that, the orchids' beauty is quite ethereal.

My mother also does quite well with orchids, although I prefer to leave them growing wild in the woods, where even in cold Ohio there are many varieties.

    1. Thanks Jim. Now I have cataracts and I have to have them operated. Everything seems fussy so photographs are a leap of faith! Nice to see you.

    1. I'm not an expert on Cymbidium but you might want to check the Internet for the reasons yours is not blooming. You may need to repot or separate. You should have seen our orchids in Fla. We had them hanging on the trees outside. beautiful! There may be some photos on the blog.
